The project is an addition and alteration to an 1890’s villa. The original house comprises of three stories with verandahs facing the sea and was originally owned by a ship’s captain. It is simple and iconic in form. The original house was sited at the edge of a relatively large lawn.

We wanted to address the client’s brief [improved living space, parking, better connection to the outdoors] without removing any area of garden from the property. We also wanted to respect and restore the original villa. Our solution was to build beside the villa, in a distinct language, and form all new roofs as green roofs, replacing any lost garden with new planting.

Like the interior of the house, the garden is discovered as a variety of very different spaces, which gives the project great richness as well as great seasonal change.
